Project Info
Smadar is a film following the life of an extravagant seamstress and local celebrity from Kiryat Atta, a small town in Israel. The film, shot in Super 16, shows a week in the life of Smadar as she rushes to alter her client’s clothes in time for Passover eve. While her wardrobe is one star of the show, Smadar’s words on love, relationships, and her loathing of men reveal a story of freedom and redemption.

PORTO ROCHA was invited to create a title sequence and poster designs that match the energy of the film and the essence of Smadar herself. The color pallet is contextual and responds to Smadar’s outfit sets showcased. Each title card uses colors from the clothing Smadar will be seen in next, emphasizing the importance of her wardrobe in the film and in her work and personal life. The textured effect is used to blend seamlessly into the film’s natural film grain.

An emphasis on the lavish and maximalist nature of Smadar’s home and personal style gave inspiration for the logo design. Bookman, an ornamental typeface, was used as a base for the logo design. The curves of the glyphs were customized to be bigger and lines elongated to reflect the personality of the film’s focus.

The challenge was to represent, through movement, the feeling the viewer gets from watching the film and getting to know intimately the life of Smadar. The shape is simple at first and slowly emerges fluidly until the complex shape of the title is revealed, reflective of the journey of the film to discover Smadar’s personality.
